New options in creating a better climate.

Almost everybody is aware of global warming and that carbon emissions are a big issue. A recent report by Dr. Johannes Lehman of Cornell University titled " Biochar reduces nasty nitrous oxide emissions on farms " highlights a significant but under-reported issue and a new potential solution. “Carbon Dioxide has a quiet but strong partner in climate warming crime – nitrous oxide. This nasty gas is usually produced on farms from animal manure waste and the use of synthetic fertilizer. In fact, nitrous oxide in agricultural soil has 298 times more global warming potential than carbon dioxide.” In an urban environment, we are not worried about confined animal feeding operations, but we are still contributors to nitrous oxide production. Onion Creek peak flow

I took this video on Oct 31st (around 11:30 am), the morning after our most recent Monsoon deluge. What amazed me was the speed of the creek / flow rate. Near the end of the video (v. short) you can see the width of the river and what it means to see that much water flowing to the Colorado river. Water levels at the Southeast Austin creek reached a record height of 41 feet, rising 11 feet between 6:15 and 6:30 a.m. on Oct. 31. US Health Care Costs

This is a fascinating article discussing the rising costs of health care, which brings greater clarity into the reasons why we are paying so much as citizens of one of the most developed countries in the world? Are we that ill? Maybe not. Maybe it is just that the solution to high prices, is higher prices until a better alternative comes along. So long as our nations soils are in a degenerative trajectory, better nutrition will not be part of the entrepreneurial answer. Link
