The good news is that for Central Texas, current conditions are not regarded as Extreme or Exceptional. However, it is abnormally dry and according to the national map, likely to get drier.
Action plans:
- Balance the minerals in your soil so that soil life and roots can grow to access more soil moisture.
- Water extensively this spring. Deep long soaks.
- Cover up the watered areas with a good layer of mulch, upto 4" thick. Consider using your neighbor's bagged oak leaves before purchasing bagged mulch from the stores. You need upto 4" thick to prevent the hot dry winds from evaporating all of the surface moisture. This also keeps the high UV levels from frying the microbes in the top inches of your soil.
