Drought Patterns

While on vacation this summer, I had the chance to catch up on some reading, and while in the Philadelphia area, I happened to to read The New York Times.  Page A11 on 07/20/2012 was all about the drought.  Open up or download the picture to see a great store about the incidence of drought over the past 60 years.  The data was collected by the NOAA.

"Much of the 1980s and 1990s were characteristed by unusual wetness, but a three year drought from 1987 to 1989 (and 1990 for south Texas) was among the costliest natural disasters in US history, causing 39 billion in losses in energy, water, ecosystems, and agriculture."

June 2012 was among the warmest and driest Junes since the 1950s, and nearly 1,300 counties across 29 states have been declared federal disaster areas.

Also, take a look at the top graphic which shows the percentage of teh US with moderate to extreme drought in June over the same time period.  Boom or Bust - the future of agriculture!  Contact me if you want the higher resolution picture.
